Coal & Allied helps bring health and wellbeing to local students
At Coal & Allied, building robust relationships with communities close to our operations and contributing to their sustainability are key to our community relations activities.
In April 2008 Coal & Allied partnered with Singleton High School to launch the Singleton High Schools Senior Student Health and Well Being Programme.
This initiative is designed to build life skills and help young people in Singleton reach their full potential.
To deliver the programme, Coal & Allied's Mount Thorley Warkworth and Hunter Valley Operations joined forces with Singleton High School, partnering with organisations such as the New South Wales Police Force, the Defence Force, Hunter New England Health, Singleton City Council and regional health and life experts.
The programme has been divided into six modules:
- 'Study smart' to instil in students the importance of setting targets, preparing and being persistent in their goals;
- 'Step up' to build drug and alcohol awareness using a hypothetical situation;
- 'It's your body...look after it' to promote healthy eating, nutrition and a healthy body image.
- Fitness and stress relief;
- 'Mental health issues affect everyone' to build awareness of these issues and provide guidance about how students can help those around them;
- 'Help yourself to avoid stress' to show students how to keep fit at home and stress relief techniques.
All year 11 and 12 students attending school within Singleton have been invited to attend each one-and-a-half hour module, including students from Singleton High School, St Catherine's College and Singleton Christian College.
Coal & Allied Principal Advisor Community Relations Stephen Sneddon said the programme was designed to prepare students better for the challenges ahead.
"Senior students in today's society face a number of personal, social and career related challenges, let alone the looming pressure of sitting their Higher School Certificate exams," Mr Sneddon said.
"We hope the Singleton High Schools Senior Student Health and Wellbeing Programme gives students a chance to stop and think about how they can effectively deal with these challenges and become the best young adults they can become.
"Many of the health and wellbeing messages delivered through the programme are based around values we hold as a company.
"It's a great chance for us to engage with the community and become a conduit for discussion about issues that are important and relevant to all of us.
